            PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

            From Our Principal

            From Our Principal

            Dear Parents and Carers,

I am looking forward to seeing many of you tommorow evening as the Parent Community gathers for the P&F Cocktail Party. This has always been such an enjoyable evening despite the occasional weather event that sent us all to seek cover. The forecast for Saturday night promises to provide the perfect ambience for a night of good company and good conversation. The P&F host this event every year knowing it is so very important that parents have the opportunity to develop the some quality friendships that their daughters enjoy. The P&F hosted their AGM on Tuesday evening and this provided is with an opportunity to reflect on the activities and fundraising of the P&F in 2024 and thank the P&F committee of Leisha Major, Tricia Rubenstein, Lisa Hunter and Jenny Killinger. Tricia and Lisa have stepped down from their roles as Vice President and Treasurer and their expertise and commitment was recognised. Luckily we have wonderful new executive members - Kellie Kouts and Robert Pradisis stepping into those roles for 2025. The year ahead looks busy with the Cocktail Party, Spring Fair, Art Show and our perennial favourites of Mother-Daughter and Father-Daughter dinners and the Boarder Parent Association hosting the Mothers Weekend in Tamworth.

Today we enjoyed a teachers talent show at lunchtime and our students proved themselves to be a generous and engaged audience. I am in awe of the talent of my colleagues. Stephanie Pantazis (featuring in the photo of the week with Mr Galea) brought our the best in our singing, dancing, performing and lip-syncing teachers.

International Women's Day message of "March Forward" shaped our House Assemblies this week. I was privileged to be at the Aikenhead Assembly where the students heard a presentation from Ms Julie Doherty who works with "Dress for Success". This is a great agency that helps women march forward by preparing and styling them for job interviews. This service in particular serves the most vulnerable - women on release from corrective services, diverse linguistic communities and those trapped in a cycle of dependence and poverty. The intervention of "Dress for Success" has been extremely empowering. The interventions that change the course of lives need not be enormous and Julie was able to illustrate how appropriate clothing for the interview, or a hair cut and style can make such a difference to a women's confidence when participating in an employment interview. Mary Aikenhead herself would have been delighted to know that the House carries forward her name and mission is still empowering women. Our students who had recently been in Tanzania also spoke with passion about seeing the impact of education for women in Tanzania. The Education of one daughter in a family usually ensures they can all " march forward ".

At Vinnies we hope all our current and past students continue to march forward on pathways cheered by flowers and sunshine.

            Yours sincerely,

            Anne Fry

            Mother-Daughter Dinner Booking Process

We are excited to announce the upcoming Mother-Daughter dinner scheduled for Friday, 9 May in the Winx Room at Randwick Racecourse , which is always a highly anticipated event! This year, we have added 50 extra seats, bringing our total capacity to 850 people, including a dance floor for a fun evening of celebration.

While we explored alternative venues, the costs were prohibitive, so we will remain at our current location. Based on last year's ticket sales of 835, we believe this room will accommodate all mothers and daughters who wish to attend. Tickets will go on sale on Friday, 21 March , via a link on the College website. You will have the option to purchase tables of ten or individual tickets.

We encourage you to chat with your friends, as well as new parents who may be looking for others to attend with, and organise your tables of ten early, or book your individual tickets if you prefer. Please secure your tickets promptly to avoid disappointment as tickets do sell fast.

Thank you for your understanding and support, and we look forward to celebrating together!

International Women’s Day has been celebrated with gusto this week - offering both inspiration and reflection for students. Our Houses are learning more about the particular ministry of service and care of the pioneering Sisters of Charity after whom the Houses are named. In this Year of Service of the Poor, each House will identify a particular ministry to follow in the footsteps of their patron sister, accepting our call to be Pilgrims of Hope.

Wednesday’s House gatherings offered opportunity to learn about these ministries with guest speakers or interviews with community partners,  including not for profit organisations such as Dressed for Success, Jesuit Refugee Services and Open Support - all of whom accompany vulnerable women to restore hope and dignity through access to education, employment, health and a safe place to call home.  Students who participated in the Justice in Tanzania Immersion last December shared their stories of women and girls who inspired them; stories of women who have marched forward through their own hope and courage, supported by the actions of many committed to championing justice and equity for women. I wish to recognise the generosity of our students in sharing deeply personal stories about the impact these girls and women have had on their own lives, shaping perspectives and hopes for their own futures.

The walls of the College Hall have become our own Hall of Fame, showcasing the accomplishments of our St Vincent’s sports women, many of whom have achieved representative levels beyond the College. This initiative by College Sport and Health Captain, Saskia Emery, offers a visible recognition of the accomplishments of women in sport and particularly features the girls confident in their success. It is so important that our young women own their achievements and inspire peers to chase their own dreams.

And following last Friday’s Lunchtime Day 10 Concert with a strong line up of female artists, the sense of being a community that enjoys sharing talents and having fun in each other’s company was courageously championed by our teachers today. From Abba to Bon Jovi, our students gathered to smile and join in the singing. When this is what it looks like to end our working week, there is definitely a spirit of trust and good cheer in being at Vinnies.

Letters for the upcoming camp and retreat experiences have been sent to parents and carers. We very much appreciate your time in completing the permissions and updating your daughter/s’ Emergency contact and Medical details to ensure her safety in the event of an emergency (details are in the letters) . If you can attend to this this weekend whilst fresh in your minds, it makes the logistics so much easier so we can invest our time into designing the experiences for student learning.

            DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

This week our Year 7 and 9 students sat their Writing and Reading NAPLAN tests, with Language Conventions and Numeracy being completed by both cohorts early next week. The purpose of NAPLAN is to:

            • help governments, education authorities and schools to see whether young Australians are reaching important literacy and numeracy goals.
            • It can support school improvement by enabling teachers to monitor their students’ progress against the national measure, to identify strengths and areas to improve in teaching programs. It provides additional information to support teacher judgement about progress in a child’s level of literacy and numeracy attainment.
            • NAPLAN also allows parents to see how their child is progressing against national standards in literacy and numeracy.
            • NAPLAN offers students an insight into where they are at on their learning journey (adapted from https://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/faqs/naplan--general )

Unlike how it is sometimes reported in the media, it does not have a pass or fail mark and it’s not designed to judge students or schools. NAPLAN is a tool to measure the rate of growth in the areas of literacy and numeracy, as key life skills that are central to education.

NAPLAN can sometimes seem a bit disconnected for students. They are used to working in relationship with teachers and peers to build knowledge and skills- test taking is not central to this learning experience. These tests also don’t have the ‘carrot’ of the HSC, where completing that credential opens doors to further study and job opportunities. However, NAPLAN provides a really critical role in fostering that relationship between teacher and student as it’s another lens through which teachers come to understand students current ability and are able to be responsive in their learning design to ensure continued growth.

The College approaches NAPLAN in an integrated manner in the classroom, teaching skills alongside content every day. We don’t teach to NAPLAN but always teach for literacy and numeracy development, irrespective of whether a NAPLAN test is looming in the calendar. In taking this approach we are staying true to our commitment to:

            • A well rounded education,
            • Fostering skills in all literacies, including mathematical literacy, as captured in our Learning Framework
            • Developing students who are confident to act, at school and in life, with the requisite skills for their engagement in the world

            Year 7 English

In English so far this term year 7 have had such a great time learning all about past myths and legends. We have had the opportunity to learn all about the structure of a myth narrative using a narrative arc and all about how to write a detailed description on the setting and characters of a story. Last week we even had the privilege of splitting up into small groups and putting on short performances of the King Midas Myth. Everybody was laughing hysterically in their seats as each set of performers put on a fabulous show. Year 7 is having a blast in English so far and they can't wait to see what they'll be doing later on in the year.

It was another competitive weekend of water polo, with mixed results across the grades.

In the senior teams, the Firsts put up a strong fight against the PLS but fell short 7–11. The Fourths narrowly missed out on a win in a tightly contested match, while the Junior Firsts and Seconds both put in strong performances but lost by just four goals against tough opponents. The weekend ended on a high note with a dominant 7-4 win by the Year 7 team, who are now sitting in the top four of their division!

Best of luck to all teams in their upcoming matches, keep up the great work!

The Spring Fair is our annual tradition where we have our famous dog show, stalls & entertainment.

This year it is even more special, the Spring Fair coincides with the College Art Exhibition, featuring an impressive array of artworks by artists and students for viewing and purchase.

            Art Exhibition Sub-Committee

Is a collection of Art inspired and passionate Parents, who are always eager to have you as a parent to come and join to be swept away in all things art and commitment to continue this remarkable event added to the college calender by the inaugural event last year. Our ‘point of difference’ of this college event, is that all commission raised from the sale of the commercial artworks will be donated to our nominated charity for 2024 of “Open Support”. Please reach out to Danni Robinson or Matt Palmer if you are interested to assist.

            Spring Fair Sub-Committee

Love to plan an event, enjoy logistics and coordination, like working on a stall; it is all a great opportunity to come together as a group of supporting parents to transfer our college grounds into a gala Spring event. We are calling for Stall Captains, marketing & comms people. Please reach out to Jenny Killinger
