Today we enjoyed a teachers talent show at lunchtime and our students proved themselves to be a generous and engaged audience. I am in awe of the talent of my colleagues. Stephanie Pantazis (featuring in the photo of the week with Mr Galea) brought our the best in our singing, dancing, performing and lip-syncing teachers.
International Women's Day message of "March Forward" shaped our House Assemblies this week. I was privileged to be at the Aikenhead Assembly where the students heard a presentation from Ms Julie Doherty who works with "Dress for Success". This is a great agency that helps women march forward by preparing and styling them for job interviews. This service in particular serves the most vulnerable - women on release from corrective services, diverse linguistic communities and those trapped in a cycle of dependence and poverty. The intervention of "Dress for Success" has been extremely empowering. The interventions that change the course of lives need not be enormous and Julie was able to illustrate how appropriate clothing for the interview, or a hair cut and style can make such a difference to a women's confidence when participating in an employment interview. Mary Aikenhead herself would have been delighted to know that the House carries forward her name and mission is still empowering women. Our students who had recently been in Tanzania also spoke with passion about seeing the impact of education for women in Tanzania. The Education of one daughter in a family usually ensures they can all " march forward ".
At Vinnies we hope all our current and past students continue to march forward on pathways cheered by flowers and sunshine.
