        PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

        From Our Principal

        From Our Principal

        Dear Parents and Carers,

This morning a small group gathered in the Caritas Christi Courtyard to commence our Snug-as-a-bug-in-a-rug day with a liturgy.  There was so much to pray for as we contemplated World Environment Day and the legacy of Pope Francis, who encouraged us to listen to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor:  It was a beautiful way to start the day, and I congratulate Mr Harvey and our student leaders for their insightful prayers and reflections.

Sunday is World Ocean Day, and we are all starting to feel excited about our “Laudato Sea” initiative.  Our aspiration is to launch a small, robotic, solar-powered boat to traverse the Pacific Ocean.  Thanks to our P&F we have been able to resource this magnificent multi-disciplinary learning opportunity - all subjects and all the community will be able to follow the progress of our vessel as it finds its way through the ocean recording temperatures, presence of algae; send photographs and navigational progress data and allow us to join this great pilgrimage of hope.  Follow us @svclaudatosea

Parent Teacher Interviews will commence this evening and continue tomorrow for Years 8-10.  These conversations are critical in celebrating learning or holding students accountable for the choices they are making “every day, every lesson” that shape the learning culture of the classroom.  Please support the participation of your daughter in the interview and make each interview an opportunity to identify future focussed goals around improvement and growth.

I hope, whether you are by disposition a Royalist or Republican, that you enjoy the King's Birthday weekend.  The extra day to relax always adds immeasurably to the enjoyment of a weekend.

        Yours sincerely,

        Anne Fry

On Tuesday afternoon our teaching staff engaged in a Professional Learning workshop with the Association of Independent Schools focused on sensory processing and neurodiversity. Thank you to Mrs Mary Cartmer and  Ms Alison Boyd-Boland for enabling this support of teachers in deepening our understanding of how everyday life and learning experiences feel like to people who are sensory sensitive or sensory avoidant. The collaborative dialogue amongst teachers identifying strategies to respond to particularities of need was affirming of their commitment to understand what the learning experience can feel like for our students.

An interesting notion we are familiar with in the education of girls is the inclination of girls who are neurodivergent to mask or hide their condition symptoms. This can be understood in a broader sense of the transition to being a teenager wanting to fit in and consequently copying peers. I thus enjoyed this following article from the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools that begins:

“Neurodiversity doesn’t need fixing. It’s just your brain. It is your state of existing. There is nothing to fix. It is wonderful the way it is.” - Emily Rushton

Emily Rushton in Navigating Neurodiversity shares research and experience to support parents in understanding the journey for a neurodiverse girl “ it is not only challenging for her; it is equally hard for the adults who love her and know her to be wonderful just as she is. How can they ensure that she will confidently turn her neurodiversity into her superpower?”

(Find The Connected Girl on Amazon Music , Apple Podcasts , and Spotify .)

Next Thursday evening 12 June (7pm), parents and carers of Years 9 & 10 are invited to join a webinar facilitated by Consent Labs - “ Supporting Parents to understand Consent ”. This webinar is offered free of charge thanks to the generosity of the P&F, indeed an opportunity to consider how we as a village raise our girls. Knowing that your daughters are currently learning about respectful relationships and consent (in the PDHPE curriculum) opens the dialogue for you to explore this topic through meaningful conversation informed by research and young people’s experience. Helping your daughters to have the conversations they wish to have but at times do not know how to start themselves allows them to make informed decisions and develop her voice and autonomy. It is not too late to sign up. Please see the link in this Bulletin.

Next Friday we look forward to Year 7 celebrating their mid-year of their first year of highschool in a Winter Wonderland. Details have been provided and link also in the Bulletin. Funds raised will help the education of students at The School of St Jude in Arusha Tanzania. We thank families for your continued support and partnership as we together make a difference in the lives of others.

        DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

This time of term can often feel, for both students and their families, that assessments are dominating both time in class and time at home. The latter part of a term is often a natural point when teachers and students are keen to know where they are at and what learning has been mastered. However, in working towards these summative moments, it’s also worth putting in perspective:

        • Our reports capture a full semester’s worth of learning, and are not solely about formal assessments
        • This is why our report outcomes in Years 7-10 describe what is central to each subject, not what was covered in an assessment. We know assessments are only a small snapshot of a much larger learning experience
        • Students are able to demonstrate learning in a myriad of ways. For some students tests and assignments are their way of showcasing learning, but for other students this has occurred in class discussion, in a homework task, in role play, collaborative tasks, 1:1 moments with their teacher. All these demonstrations of learning are valued, important and worth celebrating

Assessments are also not just about the learning gained, but are also part of the learning process and occasions where students are developing the behaviours and attributes that support learning. When we surveyed Year 7 and 8 at the start of the year they told us that they know how to study, and yet are not always confident that they are using really effective  study strategies or drawing on a wide repertoire of strategies.

Assessments are therefore learning opportunities to try new strategies and build the attributes to support learning well beyond a single test. Our staff are providing targeted lessons in Year 7 and 8 about how to study different kinds of contents and prepare for different learning experiences. Through explicit instruction, practice in engaging with study strategies in class we hope to support our students to become confident and resourceful learners, able to draw on a repertoire of practices that support their learning at the College and beyond.

I hope all families enjoy the long weekend and that our students are able to strike a healthy balance of rest, enjoyment and engagement with their learning over a well earned three day weekend.

        Xtend Program

What could be better than your daughter arriving home in the evening having completed all her homework, feeling chuffed that she has started an assessment well ahead of schedule and is now ready to enjoy the remainder of the evening with you?

Such is life for a number of our day school families whose daughters joined the College’s  Xtend@Vinnies Boarding this term. Xtend is an extended day program that enables day students to enjoy the benefits of boarding such as access to communal lounge facilities, afternoon tea and dinner, participation in structured evening study study and mentoring from a range of expert teachers and tutors.

For many of our senior students in Years 10-12, the opportunity to stay at school means they are still using the best hours of the day to engage with learning, rather than losing this time commuting home and getting sucked into all the distractions that come their way.

At school they are able to:

        • Study in dedicated spaces, where the consciousness that everyone else is ‘getting on with it’ encourages the students to focus on their tasks and maximise their time
        • Engage with teaching staff and mentors who can support students with subject specific questions (the Maths staff rostered on each night are always in demand!), or offer more general guidance about building effective study habits
        • Benefit from peer support and the collaborative benefits of studying together

Some of our Xtend students have commented:

Xtend Day is the perfect opportunity to catch up on work and even get ahead in classes. The studious environment encourages me to stay focused and be productive. Since I began participating in Xtend, I've been able to complete more study and manage my workload more effectively. I definitely recommend Xtend Day—especially to Year 11 and 12 students

        Scarlette Hamilton-Byrnes

I am so grateful to be a part of Vinnies Xtend program, which has shown me how to balance school and social life, with the bonus of getting to know the boarders on a personal level. Being in such a connected environment has made me view studying as something I enjoy rather than a chore and the teachers that give us 1 on 1 time until we completely understand something is incredible! In the senior years it's common to be stressed but being able to talk to the boarders all together after a long day lets you know you’re not alone and they are by your side experiencing the same thing. Especially seeing how much the Boarding Staff purely cares about the girls is extraordinary. They make sure to know everyone personally so you always feel welcome and honestly when it's time for the day girls to leave, we talk about how excited we are for next week.

        Adrianna Augoustis

So far I have loved the Xtend program!!! The boarders have been so welcoming to us and the study sessions are very effective. The teachers are always very happy to help us and are very generous with their time

        Harper Kroon

If your daughter would like to consider joining the extended day program next term, or is interested in our new offering of an extended stay overnight experience, look out for the brochure and registration form that will be issued in Week 8 of this term.

        Dear Parents and Carers,

As part of our commitment to student wellbeing and digital safety, our Year 8 students have recently been taking part in Digital Citizenship workshops during their Science of Wellbeing lessons. These sessions have focused on helping students navigate the online world responsibly and safely.

A key focus of the recent workshops has been cyberbullying - what it looks like, how it can affect others, and most importantly, what steps students can take if they or someone they know is experiencing it. Students were engaged in open discussions around appropriate online behaviour, strategies for managing difficult digital interactions, and the importance of speaking up and seeking support when needed. These workshops fit in with our Visible Wellbeing SEARCH Pathways 'Attention & Awareness' and 'Coping'.

We encourage you to take a moment to chat with your daughter about what she has learned in these sessions. A simple conversation at home can reinforce the messages we've shared at school and help her feel supported in managing her digital life with confidence and kindness.

Please see attached resources that will help you to start and guide a conversation with your daughter.

        Snug-As-A-Bug

        Snug-As-A-Bug

“Faith in action is love, and love in action is service.”

        — St Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa)

As the cold winter evenings settle in, St Vincent’s College continues to embody the spirit of faith, compassion, and service through meaningful acts of service. I would like to take a moment to highlight the incredible work our community is engaged in through the Vinnies Night Patrol and our much loved “Snug as a Bug in a Rug” Day.

Last week, students and their families came together not only to offer warmth and dignity to those in need but also to reflect on the power of small acts of kindness. On Saturday 31st May, three Year 11 students and their mums embraced the cold night air, offering hot drinks, food, and heartfelt conversations to those doing it tough this winter. United in their mission to serve with love and without judgment, they represented the heart of our College values taking part in our Mother/Father Daughter Night Patrol.

To capture just how rewarding the experience was, I asked our volunteers, Charlotte Evans of Year 11, and her mother, Jemma Evans to reflect on their experiences.

“Volunteering at the Vinnies Night Patrol was truly a rewarding experience,” Charlotte shared. “Being able to listen to someone and show care and compassion, regardless of their circumstances, was invaluable. Seeing young children and people my own age made me realise how difficult life can be and how important it is to treat everyone with dignity.”

Charlotte also reflected on the behind the scenes efforts that make this service possible from sandwiches made by Catholic primary school students to snack packs lovingly assembled by the wider community.

“It showed me how easy it is to make a positive impact. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone considering it.”

Her mother, Jemma, described the evening as transformative:

“Meeting so many people facing homelessness, especially on cold winter nights, opened my eyes to the daily struggles many endure within our local community. The simple act of offering a warm drink or a friendly conversation made me realise how much these small gestures matter. It fostered a deep sense of empathy and gratitude, leaving us humbled and inspired to do more. Reminding us that our faith lived through action and service is at the core of the Catholic mission.  It was a privilege to share this experience with Charlotte and her friends.”

Their reflections serve as a powerful reminder of the real world impact we all can do following our College value for this year of Service of the Poor.

Coinciding with World Environment Day, Thursday 5th June saw the College community come together for Snug as a Bug in a Rug Day a colourful, cosy, and heartfelt celebration of both environmental consciousness and social justice.

Students arrived wrapped in scarves, beanies, Ugg boots, and cosy winter attire, adding a warm splash of personality to the College grounds. While the heaters remained off to simulate the experience of winter without warmth, spirits remained high. The day began with a liturgy focused on Caritas Christi , inviting all to reflect on Care for Our Common Home while listening to the cry of both the environment and the poor. Gathered around the Homeless Jesus statue, students were reminded of the deeper purpose behind the day recognising the hidden face of Christ in all those we meet, and the importance of conducting ourselves with compassion and meaning in every encounter. The liturgy added profound perspective to a day that was both fun and deeply moving.

The irresistible smell of hot chocolate and Krispy Kreme donuts wafting through the courtyard was a highlight for many. With all proceeds directed to Open Support and Dress for Success, the College raised significant funds to support vulnerable women and families in crisis. From the gold coin donations to generous contributions of clothing and essential items, the day was a vibrant success proving once again that our community thrives when warmth and generosity go hand in hand.

In all we do, we are challenged to recognise the face of Jesus in those we meet and to respond with love, dignity, and purpose. Through nights of compassion and days of community spirit, St Vincent’s College continues to walk gently and boldly in service to others. Whether it’s through a heartfelt conversation on the streets or a warm cup of hot chocolate, every gesture matters and every student has the power to make a difference.

The program enables you to share the joy of reading by borrowing two copies of a book of your choice from our Library - one for you and one for your daughter. You are able to read together and then discuss your favourite character, debate about how the story will end and share your favourite moments. Reading with your child is a powerful way to cultivate the habit of reading and reading for enjoyment.

It provides insight into the field, helps develop skills and attributes, and provides networking opportunities. However, obtaining medical work experience can be challenging due to various restrictions such as limited opportunities, safety concerns, and confidentiality issues.

NIE has developed Future Doctors Australia to provide young people with an opportunity to gain medical work experience in a safe and structured environment. Participants will have the opportunity to spend time with current junior and senior medical students. They will also have the rare opportunity to spend time with more senior clinicians and various medical specialists. For more information, including cost, use the link found here.
