Empty schools have a particular forlorn feeling, but this week, the laughter, conversation and movement are back and Term 1 is off and running! The arrival of Year 7s every year is such a highlight and with them, they bring wonder and awe, curiosity and excitement. Combined with their oversized blazers and backpacks and hats that seem to sit low over their faces, it is all very endearing. Thanks to Ms Doran and all who have cared for them during their first week. Next week they will have more independence and they are looking ready to go! We have also welcomed many new students and families in Years 8-11. Starting a new school is always daunting and I admire the confidence of our new students who now have to navigate through new structures, processes, friendship groups and timetables. I think as everyone approaches this first weekend of the term, there will be relief at the opportunity to relax and recover from a busy week.
We are delighted to introduce the new staff who have joined St Vincent's this year. They are a particularly interesting and varied group with many also bringing overseas, interstate and previous career experiences with them into their new appointments at St Vincent's.

Tonight, I am very excited to be attending the Year 12 Formal. It has been a very long time indeed since I attended my own. I have attended many in between then and now, but I still feel the excitement of the arrival, the reveal of the dress, the transformation from a school girl to a sophisticated woman. It is a magic night, despite the aching feet from the impossibly high heels that arrive but rarely leave on their well-pedicured feet!
There will be two big events in the next two weeks:
Opening College Mass
20 February
Inter-house Swimming Carnival
25 February
Separate information will be sent home regarding expectations and logistics.
Enjoy the weekend. The Boarders have a big weekend of activities for their first in-weekend; Sport will commence for competition and there will be the return of the school washing/ironing. I hope your daughter knows that if they can turn on a laptop, they can definitely turn on a washing machine!
I look forward to the year ahead.
Yours sincerely,
Anne Fry

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

I add my welcome to all new and returning students, families and staff as we enter into our 2025 Year of Service.
It has been a joyful week welcoming back our students following last week’s professional collaboration in readiness for nurturing the growth of the young women we educate. The hopes we share as educators and parents for your daughters are what call us into partnership. In this Jubilee Year, Pope Francis has invited us to see ourselves as pilgrims of hope, creating hope for and alongside one another - “We must not stumble upon tomorrow, we must build it, and we all have the responsibility to do so in a way that responds to the project of God, which is none other than the happiness of humankind, the centrality of humankind, without excluding anyone.” (Pope Francis).
A readiness to hold hope for one another, hope for possibilities that we can actively seek to create sits compatibility alongside our 2025 College value of Service of the Poor, inviting us to look for the variety of instances around us where poverty diminishes - seeking to transform the poor in spirit through encounters of love, intentionally choosing words and actions that enrich others and society. Our Student Leadership Team with their fellow Year 12 students ignited reflection on this value on their first day back into Tutor groups. I applaud their wisdom and goodness as they seek to nurture our school culture so we may grow to be the best version of ourselves. Our College Co-captains’ Assembly address is included in this Bulletin and I encourage you to take the time to read and reflect.
We look forward to opportunities to meet in conversation with parents and carers this term. For new families I encourage you to attend such events to meet and come to know both staff (Parent Information Evenings for Years 11 & 9) and fellow parents (the P&F Cocktail party is a wonderful opportunity for this), as well as your daughter’s new peers at events (such as the Swimming Carnival if that is possible).
I would very much like to flag for Years 7 & 8 parents the upcoming Parent Education Seminar on Tuesday 4 March 6-8pm , facilitated by expert psychologists, Dr Judith Locke and Dr Danielle Einstein - “Helping your child manage their worry” . We are most fortunate to have secured this date, confident that the expertise and techniques will assist parents in helping their children to manage those moments of worry, developing coping strategies, habits and a disposition towards confident and capable young people who will navigate the expected challenges in life with problem solving skills, awareness of one’s strengths and a disposition towards sitting with uncertainty with an orientation towards real hope and growth. We will make arrangements for our boarding families to access this learning.
May I please ask all parents and carers to support the College expectations of students in regards to punctuality, uniform and technology. In truth we have had a buoyant start to the year. There is a very positive feel amongst us - both in energy and affection - students’ uniforms are looking impressive and girls have been ready to remove the holiday jewellery and lock their phones into their new pouches. All our decisions are based on the desire for the best outcomes for students - both their wellbeing and learning; they are made with discernment drawn upon the science of wellbeing and impact on attention for learning, and our experience in relationship with our own girls. I take delight in sharing here how good they are.
Two quotes for the week:
“Sir this should have happened a long time ago”
“Our break times feel a lot longer as we are talking more with each other”
“ That was the most number of girls I have spoken to in a break”
We hope this experience prompts reflection for new routines at home as a family as we create moments to be truly present in our relationships and focus of attention. We are right alongside you.
Parents/ carers of Years 11 and 12 have received communication from me today regarding Leave in Study periods, whilst parents/carers of Years 7-10 have received a letter regarding student preparedness for practical subjects of PDHPE, PASS, Dance & Drama for 2025. Your early attention to these matters is also appreciated as we support our students in developing their own responsibilities, good habits and routines to engage in optimal learning.

One of my take-away feel good moments for the week has been welcoming new students to the community of St Vincent’s College. I have the joy of being a Year 7 Tutor teacher and delighted in showing my Cahill Tutor group our rooftop views as we celebrated January and February birthdays. I end my week looking forward to accompanying our Class of 2025 at their Year 12 Formal, commencing their final year in celebration and pride in the wonderful people they are. Thank you to the brave teachers who are very likely to accompany them onto the dancefloor!
My very best wishes to you and your families for 2025.

BOARDERLINES

From the Boarding House
From the Boarding House
Term 1 is off to a flying start as we welcomed back our Vinnies boarders on Sunday and Monday.

The week prior we welcomed our SCEGGS boarders on campus as the term dates for this term had them starting earlier. These students were greeted with the friendly faces of their peers as well as much loved staff. Our Sunday involved welcoming our new Year 7 boarders and returning Year 12 boarders. We then welcomed Year 8-11 boarders on Monday. It has been fantastic to see the Boarding Precinct thriving with our students filling the halls, courts and dining room. It has also been fantastic to witness the care the boarders have for each other, particularly the care shown to our new boarders.
As the new Dean of Boarding I am looking forward to being part of this community as is my husband Rob and our two dogs. Our Boarding staff are also excited to be back taking care of the boarders and looking forward to a great term together. Our team consists of Susan Turner, Anne Plowman, Isabella Zuccato, Chloe Lenehan, Lucy Lock and Jasmine Law. If you have any queries about boarding please contact me via symonss@stvincents.nsw.edu.au
DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome students and their families back to the College as we commence the 2025 academic year.
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome students and their families back to the College as we commence the 2025 academic year. There has been a buzz of energy as the halls have filled with the stamping of feet moving from class to class, the thud of books on desks, the click of typing and the hum of conversations emanating from rooms. In the hallway there has been joyful reconnections made and lots of chatter about new courses, classes and first interactions with new teachers. In that last space, there has been plenty of recognition among students about an engaging first lesson, the time and attention students could see that teachers had given to setting up learning and the strong relationships being formed.
I came across this quotation in the holidays from a French author, Antoine de Saint Exupery:
“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea”
It speaks of the value of curiosity, dreams and goals, and the need to empower others to find their own way. It’s a fitting statement as we start the school year as there is little learning to be gained from issuing orders and telling students everything they need to know. Rather than issuing commands, learning occurs through shared partnership, with the teacher standing alongside the students, sharing knowledge and passion. It’s through these carefully designed and crafted moments that we are able to foster curiosity, inspire dreams and launch students on their quest for knowledge. I hope that every student embraces these opportunities and finds something that sparks curiosity and passion. Best wishes to all our learners for the 2025 academic year.

LEADER OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

"It is our duty to prefer the service of the poor to everything else and to offer such service as quickly as possible." – St Vincent de Paul
As we embrace this year’s College value of "Service of the Poor," we reflect on our shared responsibility to restore dignity and respect to those in need. The social justice tradition at St Vincent’s College is strong, with students stepping up year after year to make a real difference in the lives of others This ongoing commitment is inspiring, and 2025 is shaping up to be no exception. Echoing the work of Sister Maurus Tierney, serving food to unemployed men during the Great Depression During the depression years, restoring hope to those hit in hard times. With only a few days into our year, the girls have eagerly volunteered in several initiatives, nearly filling all time slots for the entire year demonstrating their dedication and compassion to service:

✔
Matt Talbot Kiosk
– Assisting with meal service for those experiencing homelessness (
Every Thursday
)
✔
Vinnies Van
– Delivering food and essentials (One Thursday a month)
✔
Cupcakes for St Canice’s
– Baking sweet treats for the parish (Every Wednesday)
✔
Sandwich Project
– Preparing sandwiches for distribution via Vinnies Van (Two Thursdays a month)
We know hardship is growing, not only for those sleeping rough but also for families struggling to make ends meet. We know our efforts make a difference, but we cannot do this alone. Your support is invaluable.
How You Can Help:
🔹
Vinnies Van – Parent Volunteers Needed!
We are looking for parents to join our
Father/Mother-Daughter Vinnies Van
roster, running
one Saturday a month
. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to serve together, delivering food and care to those in need. Parents will need a
Working With Children Check
(details on the
sign-up sheet
).
🔹
Food Donations – Woolworths Vouchers
Could you help fund a meal? A
Woolworths or Coles voucher
would go a long way in keeping our initiatives running. These vouchers are needed regularly and help provide essential food supplies for the
Sandwich Project
and
Vinnies Van
, ensuring we can continue offering meals to those who rely on us. Vouchers can be purchased online and emailed directly to
harveym@stvincents.nsw.edu.au
Thank you for being part of this incredible tradition of service and compassion at St Vincent’s College. Together, we can continue to make a meaningful impact.

STUDENT LEADERS

We hope you all had a restful break - whether it was spent with family, catching up with friends, or just taking a well-earned breather. Now, as we step into this new year, we encourage you to approach it with enthusiasm, determination, and a willingness to give your all. We would like to first appreciate that we have 32 new students in Years 8 - 11, 15 new staff members and of course 130 Year 7s.
To our new Year 7 students, and to those joining us from all year levels, welcome to St Vincent’s! This is a place where you will find friendships, opportunities, and a community that will support you every step of the way. We can’t wait to meet you and get to know you throughout the year!
This year, our focus College value is Service of the Poor. A call to show compassion, to look beyond ourselves and to find ways to uplift others. But what does it mean to be poor? Often, we associate poverty with financial struggle and while that is certainly one form of it, being ‘poor’ can take many shapes. Someone can be poor in spirit, lacking confidence, or feeling disconnected. This year, we want to challenge each of you to notice the moments when someone might need support, encouragement, or simply kindness.
We have both thought a lot about how we get people to connect with the Service of the Poor, and we wanted to create a simple but powerful slogan to guide our vision for the year: “Fill our cups, lift us up”, for us this means that this year we wanted to fill the cups of others and ourselves, as this would lift us up as a community making us stronger. A lot of the time, when we serve others or give a compliment, we fill our own cups as well as fill another person's. This would ultimately lift us up, with emphasis on the ‘us’ part, as it is about lifting the other person and yourself up together, making sure both cups are full.
This reminds us that when we serve others -- when we give, support, and uplift, we also fill our own cups. Service is never one-sided. It strengthens both the giver and the receiver. It creates a ripple effect, building a community that lifts each other up. In this year of Service of the Poor, we want to focus on three areas, our Vinnies community, the Potts Point/close external community, and globally and see how we can serve these three areas this year.
When thinking about how we can put this value into action, the inspiring figure of Mother Teresa came to mind. She dedicated her life to caring for the most vulnerable, not for recognition, but simply because she saw a need and answered it. She once said: “We are trying to bring that love and peace and joy to our neighbour and in the street we live and then again to the whole world”. Her words remind us that service isn’t just about large, distant acts, it begins here, in our own school, in our own community. It’s in the kindness we show to each other, in choosing compassion, and in lifting those around us. As we go forward this year, let’s take inspiration from her legacy. Let’s be a College that doesn’t just talk about service, but lives it, in the small, everyday ways that make a difference.
Over the holidays, we had the incredible opportunity to attend the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools Leadership Conference. We met over 150 girls from across Australia, New Zealand and Zimbabwe, each with different stories, experiences and perspectives on leadership. We learned how to communicate effectively, how to create meaningful school initiatives and most importantly, how to lead with purpose. We both left the conference inspired to bring new ideas back into our school and to make a positive change within our community.
As we step into this new year, we invite each of you to think about what your impact will be. How will you contribute to making this year one where we truly fill our cups and lift us up together.
We can’t wait to see everything we will achieve as a College this year.
