            PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

            From Our Principal

            From Our Principal

            Dear Parents and Carers

Yesterday the College was well represented at the funeral of our former Principal, Ms Michele Hugonnet.  The presence of our students was deeply appreciated by Michele's family, friends and her wide network of colleagues across many Catholic agencies.  I received many notes of appreciation regarding the wonderful musicians, the guard of honour and the very visible presence of Vinnies' girls (past and present).

            Dear Anne,
I am writing on behalf of the Hugonnet family to express appreciation for the contribution the students of the College made to the funeral service of its former Principal,  Michele Hugonnet.
Michele loved St Vincent’s, its spirit, traditions, and educational excellence. However, it was the students who she loved the most. To have present students honour Michele with such dignity and respect would have meant so much to Michele.
Of course, the singing of Michele Ma Belle, expressed so much of the affection that people have for Michele.
Please let the students know much their presence meant to the family.
            Regards,
            Peter

Last week the P&F met for their final meeting of the year.  There was much to celebrate as the collective community building and fundraising achievements were reviewed.  The P&F have funds they are now looking to distribute to projects in 2026 - they have been, in recent years, generous supporters of community, staff and student initiatives.  If you have any projects you would like considered, please drop me an email and I will pass them on to our P&F committee.  At our meeting, we also celebrated the significant contributions of the outgoing President of the P&F, Mrs Leisha Major.  If you would like to be involved in the P&F Executive next year, there are always opportunities for enthusiastic parents.

Tonight our Year 9s will enjoy a Bush Dance with the students from St Mary's Cathedral College.  They will learn the classic bush dances that form such an important part of Australian dance culture.  There will be much 'boot-scooting' in the Atrium tonight!

            Yours sincerely,

            Anne Fry

            DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Three of our senior student Mission Leaders participated in the Archbishop’s Student Leadership Forum today. It was a wonderful opportunity for formation and dialogue as young Catholics engaged with the theme "Courageous Leadership in Christ”. His Grace, Archbishop  Anthony Fisher invited students to consider courage as moral virtue with a specifically Christian lens.

He suggested ways in which this courage manifests: courage to face up to the truth about ourselves, knowing we experience anxiety and failure but still can be loved and redeemed; courage to proclaim uncomfortable truths - impelled to speak and act for what is good; courage to not always be popular - suggesting that if nobody ever disagrees with you, you likely don't stand for anything.

Students offered rich insight into what they perceive the challenges in their world today and expressed their desire for drawing upon their Catholic faith to be leaders of school communities that experience the hope of Christ. When responding to a question about the challenge of a balancing the valuing of opinion against challenging divergent views, Archbishop Fisher advised that young people do not let culture inoculate themselves from asking the big social-political questions of their time, but to do so with humility - to be open to listening and to persuasion, to hear something that we had not thought of, be open to reasoning and changing one’s mind. I include the reflections of students who attended:

“Through stimulus questions and engaged conversation with peers and the Archbishop himself, we discussed our experiences as young courageous leaders of Christ. Amongst the students the most prominent concern was the fear of losing their catholic identity within a secular society. It was an issue I hadn't extensively reflected on growing up in an environment that was driven by Catholic principles but appreciative of non-religious society. Other concerns were surrounding the rise of social media and its impact on expressing faith.

These discussions challenged me to consider how my upbringing and the world I interact with everyday has shaped my faith, specifically how my identity in Christ is strengthened not by isolation but by engagement. We left the forum encouraged by the support and strength shown to us” - Louisa

“It was an amazing experience to listen to Archbishop Fisher. His perspective on courage and what that means for Christians was inspiring and insightful to listen to. We were also allowed to speak with other school leaders from all over Sydney, listening to and collaborating with them on ideas and social justice initiatives they are involved in. It was an incredible experience and I look forward to taking the valuable lessons learnt into the next year.” - Charlotte

“Today at the Leadership Forum led by the Archbishop, I had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussion with leaders from other schools. Together, we explored how we can balance our spiritual calling with the practical realities of Catholic leadership. One of the most impactful moments was when the Archbishop explained to us that it is through confronting uncomfortable truths that allow us to be our authentic selves, encouraging us to lead with faith, humility and courage.” - Macy

This evening we look forward to some boot scooting barn yard dancing for our Year 9 students as we host a bush dance with guests from St Mary’s Cathedral College. I hold an image in my mind of my own school days in Tamworth - my Deputy Principal at the time had an absolute love of country music and somehow managed to end every dance (or disco as we called them back then) - with John Denver’s ‘ Thank God I’m a Country Boy’ , and of course we inserted our chant of ‘country girl’. I anticipate the same enjoyment for our girls and boys this evening. The Atrium has transformed in anticipation, with hay bales and a long country table ready for conversation and companionship. Thank you to Mr David Woolbank, Dean of Middle Secondary, who has organised this event,  supported by Ms Holly Arndt and Ms Michelle Smith, supervising staff, the Year 11 Tanzanian Immersion students and parents, and enabled by the generosity of the P&F.

            TERM 4 SPORT

As the season draws to a close, please make sure you are still doing the right thing and attending training and giving 100% to your team and coach. There are no finals for the IGSA sports, it’s first past the post, so keep pushing hard right to the end. We are about to do the grading for next term’s competitions and some teams may slightly change so please keep striving to do your best and play with Vinnie’s spirit. Our Touch Football girls are heading into the semifinals round this weekend so best of luck for all.

            IGSA TENNIS

We are extremely proud of the girls’ efforts over the weekend, with 7 out of 8 teams securing impressive wins. From tight matches that came down to a single game, to confident and convincing victories, the results show just how much every point matters.

It has been fantastic to see the athletes’ competitive spirit continue to grow, with clear improvements reflected in their scores each week. Just as impressive is the camaraderie on and off the court—girls supporting one another, lifting each other up after missed shots, and celebrating each success together.

With only two rounds remaining, we are excited to see how many of our teams can finish in the top three of their divisions. Well done to all players, and best of luck for the final stretch of the season!

Ms Tonya Hetreles - Head Tennis Coach

This term, the Water Polo teams at St Vincent's College have faced a mix of challenges, growth, and valuable learning experiences. SVC 2 also sits 2nd, an outstanding achievement in a particularly competitive division. Their positive attitude and continual improvement have kept them firmly among the top teams.

SVC 3 is currently at the bottom of the table, but has shown determination, resilience, and steady development week after week. With two rounds to go, they remain focused on finishing the season with pride and effort.

SVC 4 sits 4th on the ladder and has delivered solid performances across the term. As they approach the final rounds, the team is aiming to consolidate their position and close out the season strongly.

SVC 5, placed 5th, has shown significant growth over the term. Their teamwork and persistence have been clear, and they’ll be looking to carry that momentum into the last two matches.

SVC 6, sitting 6th in their first year of schoolgirl competition, has shown impressive potential and improvement despite facing tough opponents. With two rounds left, they’re eager to finish the season with their best performances yet.

As we head into the second last round, all teams have exciting matchups ahead and are looking to finish the term on a high.

Best of luck to all teams this weekend!
