                PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

                From Our Principal

                From Our Principal

                Dear Parents and Carers,

Today is the International Day of Celebration of Educators. At St Vincent's College this week, we have prayed for our teachers, expressed our appreciation, and the P&F have provided an abundant feast for our educators to sit together and enjoy. The recognition of educators should not be limited to only one day of the year and I am always delighted that the classroom culture of St Vincent's has created a tradition of lessons finishing with a "Thanks, Miss" or "Thanks, Sir". Teachers who have left St Vincent's and gone to other schools often comment on how much they miss those spontaneous expressions of appreciation at the end of lessons or events. Mary Aikenhead Education, through their Chair, Prof. Marie Emmitt, issued a statement today of appreciation to our staff and those at our sister schools in Queensland and Victoria.

                READ LETTER

I have made a late start to Term 4, having taken a couple of weeks of Long Service Leave. It was a very special opportunity to be in Rome during the Jubilee year and complete the pilgrimage through the Holy Doors. I wasn't the only one with the same idea and while Rome is always busy the week I was there was frantic with the Rome Marathon, a royal visit from Charles and Camilla, seven canonisations and Pilgrims from around the world. It was insightful to see the rich diversity of the Church that gathers in Rome at the great Basilica of St Peter. I attended a Papal Audience with Pope Leo (I have to state, not an intimate chat) as part of a large gathering of thousands standing in the pouring rain. But I was close enough to see in him the face of Christ. It was very special and he impelled us all to combat sadness wherever we encounter it in ourselves and others. In his words, to bring the 'warmth of hope to all we know are experiencing the coolness of despair.

While I was away, I was very sorry indeed to miss the production of "This Murder was Staged". As No. 1 ticket holder for so many student events, the production is always an annual highlight and I am looking forward to sitting down over the weekend with a pot of tea and watching the video. Congratulations to the cast and crew and especially Ms Johnson for her masterful roles of director and producer.

Enjoy the weekend. The big Feast of All Saints and All Souls occur this weekend and provides us with an opportunity to look with gratitude to the living and the dead who have shaped us and nurtured us with love.

                Yours sincerely,

                Anne Fry

                DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Today our Chapel was opened with an invitation to students and staff to take time in prayer to remember the saints and departed souls who have inspired our lives. Saturday is All Saints Day , followed by the Feast of All Souls on Sunday. It was moving to see the beauty with which the light in the chapel grew throughout the day, as community members took their own quiet time to make a visit and light a candle.

All Saints Day is a day to commemorate all saints of the Church - known and unknown. The day invites us to give focus to those who have led extraordinarily holy lives on earth and that the Church has canonized as saints. These individuals committed their lives to what they saw as their call to God: some by enduring martyrdom or persecution, many through prayer and acts of service, such as caring for those in need or teaching the faith. Some saints were powerful preachers or miracle workers. Whilst some were leaders, some lived in obscurity, others experienced exile or made significant personal sacrifices for their faith. I’m sure most of us would not label ourselves a saint – but are we willing to do the good works we are capable of doing in service of those around us? The prayer below offers pause to consider the great and the ordinary saints in our lives.

                A Prayer for All Saints

For the people of God who are sent to support us,

For the people of God who are sent to disturb us,

For the people of God who are sent to inspire us,

For the people of God who are sent to trouble us,

For the people of God who are sent to enthuse us,

For the people of God who are sent to still us

                Thanks be to God.

                Amen

                (Canon Simonèo)

Sunday’s Feast of All Souls , offers a pause to remember, with tenderness and faith, all who have gone before us. We hold in prayer our loved ones who now rest in God’s eternal embrace. We remember in a special way all who have died in Christ and ask God to give them eternal peace and light. On this day too, may we remember with gratitude the impact of those souls in the time of their living amongst us, and with love offer our prayer.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May their soul and all the souls of the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
                Amen.

This afternoon parents and carers of Years 9 & 10 will have received letters that provide details for the upcoming Year 9 Bush Dance and Year 10 Social. Both of these occasions offer opportunity for students to extend their relationship building within and beyond the College. We pride ourselves on being a welcoming and inclusive community; both these occasions invite the girls to nurture camaraderie amongst their year group as they grow in recognition of the gifts they share with each other, whilst also inviting them to extend this hospitality to peers across other schools. Your prompt response to these letters is appreciated.

I extend my thanks to our staff who give generously of their time in organising and supervising many student events beyond the school day.  One of these was on Sunday when our newly appointed 2025 - 2026 Year 12 Student Leadership Team gathered as a team, to reflect on the College values and their vision for the year ahead, whilst developing their skills in team building and communication. It was a day that saw these young women as true contemplatives in action, savouring the heart of what makes our community special whilst considering how they will invite students to give expression to the 2026 value of Generosity of Spirit. One way in which this team put their hopes into action was evident in Wednesday’s College Assembly by expressing deep gratitude to all staff in the College for their contribution to their education and care, whether that be in the classroom, sport field or boarding house. Today’s World Teachers Day lunch, generously provided by the P&F, was another delight appreciated by staff. There is goodness in the recognition that the education of our students is one given with great care and love.

                DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

This term, St Vincent’s College is delighted to welcome two pre-service teachers who are undertaking their first practicum experience. This initial placement is observational in nature, allowing them to immerse themselves in the rhythms of school life, observe skilled practitioners, and begin to connect theory with the lived experience of teaching and learning.

Teaching is a deeply relational and intellectually demanding profession , and unlike many other fields, much of a teacher’s professional learning happens in their own classroom , often without the immediate presence of a supervisor or mentor at their side. Where doctors, nurses, or other professionals may train in structured clinical teams, teachers quickly take on the full responsibility of guiding, supporting, and inspiring students. This makes the practicum experience profoundly formative and incredibly valuable.

By opening our classrooms and sharing our professional expertise, schools like ours play a vital role in shaping the next generation of educators. Supporting pre-service teachers is not only an act of generosity; it is an investment in the future of education. It ensures that our profession continues to attract and develop skilled, reflective, and compassionate teachers, educators who will uphold the high standards of practice and care that define the teaching vocation.

This commitment reflects the heart of the St Vincent’s College mission to educate young women who are “courageous women of action, independent of thought and compassionate attitude, strong in purpose and confident to act” By mentoring and supporting pre-service teachers, we live out these values in action: modelling generosity, collaboration, and a shared responsibility for the future of learning.

We warmly welcome our pre-service teachers and thank our staff for the generosity, guidance, and professional excellence that make such experiences possible. In nurturing them, we help ensure that expert teaching continues to flourish into the future.

                LEADER OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

This week, our College received a heartfelt letter from Ms Shanthini Naidoo, Chief Executive Officer of the St Vincent’s Curran Foundation, thanking our community for the generous contributions made through the De Lacy Social Justice Initiative.

Throughout the year, students have collected donations, clothing, and essential items to support patients of St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, including those assisted by the Homeless Health Service and women and children seeking refuge through the Open Support crisis accommodation facility. These gifts have brought care and comfort to many of the most vulnerable in our community.

This letter is a wonderful reminder that small acts of generosity can make a lasting difference. The ongoing connection between St Vincent’s College and St Vincent’s Hospital continues to reflect the Vincentian values at the heart of our community - compassion, justice, and service to others.

In the words of St Vincent de Paul, “Charity is certainly greater than any rule.”

                TERM 4 SPORT

We’ve had a fantastic start to our final term of sport, filled with competitive games, teamwork, and plenty of laughs both on and off the field and in the pool! It’s great to see teams training hard and most students showing responsibility by communicating if they can’t make a training session or game.

As the weather warms up, please remember to bring your Vinnie’s hat and apply sunscreen for all training sessions and games. If you’re unwell but still at school, you’re expected to attend and support your team from the sidelines while learning from your coach.

Good luck to all teams for Round Three this weekend! Please send through any great photos of you and your teams.

                Good Luck & Go Vinnies

                IGSA TENNIS

It’s been another strong week on the courts, with five of our eight teams securing impressive wins. The girls have shown fantastic drive and commitment throughout the first two weeks of term, demonstrating a real desire to improve and learn. We’ve been treated to some incredible tennis from long, hard-fought rallies and thrilling comebacks to nail-biting tiebreakers and moments of great composure under pressure. It’s wonderful to see such enthusiasm and sportsmanship across all teams. With this momentum building early in the term, we’re excited to see our players continue developing their skills and teamwork as the season progresses.

For those interested in participating in the Tildesley 2026 competition, training is on every Monday morning from 7:15am to 8:15am  This will be in addition to your current IGSA team training sessions. Training will initially focus on both singles and doubles players. If you know someone who is not currently involved in IGSA but would like to participate, please reach out to either myself or Ms Harmanis. The Tildesley Shield is not played until March 18-20, 2026 but we need to start training now so we are fully prepared for next year.

                IGSA WATER POLO

Congratulations to SVC 1 on their impressive victory over Santa Sabina last weekend. They are preparing for a challenging match this weekend against Monte. The junior Firsts (SVC 4) have also been training diligently, securing two commendable wins so far. SVC 2, 3, 5, and 6 are making significant progress, exemplifying Vinnie's spirit as they compete fiercely in the pool against strong opponents.

Please ensure that you arrive at the pool 30 minutes prior to the start time to allow sufficient time for sign in and an adequate warm-up. Best of luck to all teams this weekend!

                ESTA TOUCH FOOTBALL

In Week 2 of our Touch Football season, we were treated to fantastic sunshine and even better performances from our SVC teams! The beautiful weather seemed to fuel our players' energy and focus, shining through in their on field results. Every team demonstrated great improvement, building on last week’s foundation at training with sharper skills, tighter defensive plays and more strategic attacking plays.

With each game, our players are developing a stronger grasp of the game, fine tuning their defensive tactics, and making more accurate plays. Their determination and growing confidence are clear on the field, and it's inspiring to see each student bringing fresh energy and ideas to training and games.

Keep up the incredible effort, and let’s carry this momentum forward!

                Good luck, and Go Vinnies!

                SANTA SABINA VOLLEYBALL

In Week 2 of our Volleyball season, our SVC teams faced both highs and challenges, with some teams celebrating wins and others demonstrating impressive teamwork and skill. The players took to the court with focus and determination, and it’s inspiring to see their hard work already making an impact from training.

Not only are our teams advancing in technical skills, but they’re also building deeper connections on and off the court. Their communication and support for one another have been outstanding, with every rally showcasing their commitment to teamwork.

Fantastic effort from all players. Let's bring this same energy and dedication into this week’s games!
