                PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

                From Our Principal

                From Our Principal

                Dear Parents and Carers,

It was lovely to spend time with Dads and special men in the lives of our students last Friday.  The liturgy in the morning and the dinner in the evening were a lovely prelude to the Father’s Day celebrations no doubt planned for this Sunday.

On the morning news this week, I did take note of the coverage given to the ‘swooping season’ of birds that is upon us, and indeed here in the College and surrounding streets.  It seems the ‘swoopers’ are protective Dads who are territorial around the nests of their young, vulnerable chicks.  It was just an image that resonated so strongly with me after having recently seen and heard of the unconditional love of our Vinnies’ Dads for their Vinnies’ girls.  The desire to protect is strong and so too the courage to let them find their wings.  That would definitely be the emotion of our Year 12 Dads as they prepare for the graduation of their daughters and the beginning of a whole new stage of parenthood.  Parenting a young adult, newly graduated from the ‘nest’ is quite a challenge!  It is also a timely reminder that students need to be aware of swooping birds – the return of the broad Panama hats as the spring weather becomes warmer will provide good protection.

The work of the P&F in hosting two concurrent events next weekend – the Art Show and Spring Fair, is very ambitious, and totally dependent on the support of our community.  I encourage you to use your time and talents to contribute to the success of one or both of these community events.  The work of the P&F Executive and Art Show committee is largely unseen, taking place in the evenings away from the public gaze.  Let me assure you that there is plenty of work happening!  If there is any way you can donate goods per the Year level guide or prizes for silent auctions or raffles, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Music Night on Monday provided great awareness of our creative and talented musicians and singers. They will be on show again at the Spring Fair. I look forward to hearing them again and selling you a ticket on the Chocolate Wheel.

                Yours sincerely,

                Anne Fry

                DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

We are in that time of year when we are looking forward and looking back whilst endeavouring to remain attentive to the present. Students and staff are discerning nominations for the 2025-2026 Student Leaders whilst also discerning the recognition of the Class of 2025 student contributions to the community to be awarded upon graduation in just three weeks. Students are immersed in their classroom learning, always with a reflective lens buoyed by teacher feedback to discern particular strategies to enhance growth, whilst teachers reflect on student achievement to review and refine classroom practice. We are mapping out our 2026 College calendar and refining our Student Diary whilst attending to the preparations needed for our significant rituals of farewell to Year 12 and Term 4 College celebrations.

St Vincent’s College is gifted with Ignatian spirituality which invites the practice of reflection - reviewing our lives with gratitude, paying close attention to the emotions emerging from our experiences and discerning a particular hope or intention that we may pray upon so that we may see how God is working in our lives. This week I was privileged to engage in a Retreat with colleagues from our four Mary Aikenhead Ministries schools who serve our communities in the ministry of faith formation. It was an opportunity to pause and look inwards, at our own spiritual calling as a person and in the context of our mission of education within our schools which seek to nurture all members of the community in the life of Christ.

This morning I came to school via train and found myself walking a little way behind a Year 12 student who I saw tuck her shirt in as she approached the College. I smiled wondering if next year, as that same young woman is walking towards university or work, will be making the same gesture of care and pride. I hope so. I have seen this young person’s journey through the College, witnessed challenge and joy, witnessed her advocacy for including voices and perspectives, witnessed the care and accompaniment of peers, staff and family who have shaped this young woman walking towards a future that has been nurtured by moments of hope in the living in the now of our community. I was joined by a Year 7 student who shared her family’s surprise gift they were creating for Father’s Day (no spilling the secret here). It was a privilege to listen to the joy in the care this young person expressed for the Dad she loves. I hope that our families also experience the grace of gratitude in such moments just as we offer to our students.

I extend the invitation of this reflective practice with the following Examen upon week. It allows oneself to pause, to take a loving gaze upon the encounters of our days and to listen to the stirrings in one’s heart, to listen to the Spirit speaking and guiding us towards a yearning that we may seek, asking God for the gift of grace that strengthens our inner being. Put simply, it is a conversation with God - to notice God’s presence and discern God’s direction for our life.

How to Pray the Examen (Source: https://www.jesuits.org/spirituality/the-ignatian-examen/ )

Place yourself in God’s presence. Give thanks for God’s great love for you.
                2. Pray for the grace to understand how God is acting in your life.
                3. Review your day — recall specific moments and your feelings at the time.
                4. Reflect on what you did, said, or thought in those instances. Were you drawing closer to God, or further away?
                5. Look toward tomorrow — think of how you might collaborate more effectively with God’s plan. Be specific. You may like to conclude with a familiar prayer such as the “Our Father” or “Glory Be” or one of your own choosing.

If we allow ourselves moments for spiritual nourishment, may we hope for encounters of peace in our work and lives with each other. May we look with gratitude upon the encounters we share as a community of students, staff and families.

                DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Our Year 11 students (and our Year 10 accelerants) commenced their examinations this week, indicating that they are nearing the conclusion of their Preliminary courses. Examinations can feel intense, as students set themselves aspirational goals and are challenged to demonstrate their learning under timed conditions. Yet within this intensity lies the opportunity for exponential learning, where preparation, practice, and feedback combine to accelerate both understanding and growth with students seeking to gain mastery.

Examinations represent an important opportunity to strengthen both their subject knowledge and the broader skills that underpin success in their senior years. The process of preparing for and sitting examinations allows students to practise vital habits such as time management, organisation, and effective study routines. Just as importantly, it helps them to become familiar with the style, structure, and expectations of this particular style of assessment. These are skills that will continue to grow in importance as they move towards Year 12 and the HSC.

We also see examinations as a learning opportunity in themselves. Examinations can often highlight for students the value of consistent preparation. Examinations can equip students with habits of discipline, reflection, and persistence that will serve them well in their senior studies and beyond. The feedback students receive, both from their results and from teacher guidance, helps them to identify areas of strength and areas for further development. This feedback cycle is a key step in building resilience, persistence, and confidence.

Examinations are also not an individual endeavour. There have been study groups popping up around the College, as students see both motivational and learning benefits from working in collaboration with peers. At home, families also have a role to play. They can be:

                • The calm voice encouraging healthy routines with regular sleep, exercise, and breaks to sustain energy and focus.

                • The quiet presence, supporting good study habits and minimising distractions

                • The organised example, helping students to learn skills of prioritising and studying

                • The cheer squad, encouraging effort over perfection

                • The source of snacks, to keep brain and body fueled

Well done to Year 11 for reaching this milestone in their studies and best wishes for week two of your examinations.

“The measure of love is to love without measure.” – St. Augustine

At the heart of our community lies a commitment to service, and this term we are proud to highlight the De Lacy House Lead Initiative: Health Equity. In partnership with St Vincent’s Hospital, we are supporting their Mobile Health Program, which provides vital care to those most in need.

To assist this program, St Vincent’s is in urgent need of the following donations:

                • Feminine hygiene
                • Deodorant
                • Toothbrushes/Toothpaste
                • Underwear (male and Female)
                • Sports bras (all sizes)
                • Socks (all sizes)

De Lacy students will be coming around during Tutor to collect these items and continue their mission of living out our College value of Service of the Poor in 2025. It is a true testament to the girls to bring such enthusiasm and energy to such an urgent cause.

Alongside this, we ask for your continued support of the Sandwiches Project. Contributions to Woolworths gift cards are especially helpful. These can be sent directly to me at harveym@stvincents.nsw.edu.au or handed in at Student Services.

We also encourage students to stop by Coffee Queens in the mornings, where every purchase helps fund vital projects in Tanzania. A simple coffee shared among friends becomes an act of generosity that reaches far beyond our community.

Looking ahead, our Spring Fair is taking place next Sunday the 14th of September. This event is a wonderful opportunity to gather as a community, show support for Emusoi, and celebrate together. We hope to see many cheerful faces joining us on the day!

                YEAR 9 ENGLISH INCURSION

                YEAR 9 ENGLISH INCURSION

Incursions and excursions provide invaluable opportunities for students to see how their learning of concepts and skills in the classroom connect with real-world experience. They inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and show students how the knowledge and skills they develop at school have genuine relevance beyond the classroom.

Here are some insights provided by Year 9 students about their recent incursion experience.

This term, Year 9 students delved into the power of persuasive language through an exciting English incursion focused on our current study of Rhetoric and Revolutions . Led by a team of three guest speakers from Poetry in Action who were professional actors and teachers, the incursion offered a series of hands-on workshops that deepened our understanding of persuasive speech and its role in shaping ideas and movements.

Throughout the day, we explored speeches from history and contemporary activism, analysing the rhetorical techniques that made them so impactful. From repetition and emotive language to tone and body language, we learned how these tools can be used to influence, inspire, and provoke thought. We also had the opportunity to deliver our own persuasive speeches, gaining practical experience in speaking with confidence and clarity.

One of the most powerful insights we gained was that rhetoric isn’t just for politicians or public figures—it’s part of everyday life. We realised how language can be used intentionally to express ideas, challenge perspectives, and spark change.

Beyond expanding our academic knowledge, the incursion empowered us to write with purpose and speak with clarity.

                Josephine Calas - Year 9

Here are some further reflections by other students about what they learnt from the incursion:

I learned about Laban’s theories and how they can drastically change a whole speech. The direction, weight, speed, and flow of the speaker all influence how the audience digests the information and ultimately affects whether the audience will take action.

I learnt about rhetoric and persuasive language and how to apply that to my speeches or piece of work that uses this type of figurative language. We also unpacked Ziad Ahmed’s Tedtalk about stereotypes.

I learnt about the different techniques from Leban’s theory.  For example, the punch which is a way to sharply and directly deliver your lines, in contrast to a float which was very indirect and airy. Speakers use these techniques to make their speeches more interesting for the audience to listen to, so it's not just all on one level.

I learnt that there is another persuasive appeal to Ethos, Pathos and Logos and that it's Kairos. It means knowing when to speak.

I learnt how important body language is when saying a speech and to speak with confidence even if you are not 100% sure on what you are talking about.

I learnt how punctuation affects a speech and tone of voice

I learned more about the depth a short piece of writing can have and how where punctuation is placed is extremely important as it can change the whole meaning and rhythm.

I learned about punctuation and its importance in controlling pace, speed and tone within a speech or text.

I learnt about the speech from Theodore Roosevelt's speech Man in the Arena, that punctuation is very vital to changing the pace and momentum of a speech and that it has a lot of impact. For example, commas from listing and full stops when breath is needed.

                BASKETBALL

As we approach the final round game this weekend, it has been wonderful to see all students enjoying the basketball season. SVC 1 has had a strong term, recording some impressive wins and only a few narrow losses. The team has shown great resilience and determination, consistently developing their skills each week. Fingers crossed for a win this Saturday to secure a place in the top four of their division!

SVC 2 has demonstrated remarkable improvement throughout the term. Despite tough competition, all players have shown great development and strong team spirit. Their commitment at training and persistence on the court has been outstanding, and they should be proud of the progress they’ve achieved.

                SOCCER

After weeks of rain disruptions, it was a relief to enjoy clear, sunny conditions for Round 6 — even if the strong winds kept things a little chilly. All St Vincent’s teams were in action, and while the wind made passing and shooting tricky, our players adapted well, showing resilience and teamwork across the board.

In blustery conditions, SVC01 battled to a hard-fought 0–0 draw with Wenona. The result leaves their season delicately poised on a knife’s edge. A strong performance this coming week, combined with a few favourable results elsewhere, could yet see the team earn a chance to defend their title in this year’s finals series. Another tough outing for SVC02 saw them go down 2–0 to SCEGGS. Despite the result, the team showed grit against strong opposition and remain determined to finish the season on a high. With the squad made up largely of Year 11 players, the focus now is on building momentum and confidence to carry into next year. SVC03 travelled to ACU Strathfield to take on PLS, but in just their second match of the season the girls looked a little underdone. While the result didn’t fall their way, the team gained valuable match fitness and will be eager to bounce back with a stronger performance this week.

SVC04 continued their charge towards the finals with another excellent win over Loreto. The team now sits 2nd on the ladder and is building strong form at just the right time, looking well placed to defend the title they claimed back in Term 2. SVC05 produced another solid performance, edging out Meridan 1–0. With three games still to play, the team has every chance of defending their Term 2 title and will be looking to maintain their winning momentum in the run home. SVC06 faced another tough opponent this week, going down 5–1 to Wenona. With three games left in the season, our Year 7 team will look to keep building experience and resilience as they continue their first campaign in Vinnies colours.

Good luck to all teams this week. IGSA has proposed extending the season to make up for the numerous washouts. Please keep an eye on emails from me, as well as the IGSA Spawtz website, for updates regarding fixtures in Weeks 8 and 9.

Mr Nicholas Schroeder - Head Soccer Coach

                HOCKEY

It was a gutsy performance from SVC 1, who went down 2-0 despite being a player short and without any subs. Playing on an unusually large field, the girls worked tirelessly and dominated much of the first half, creating several penalty corners and narrowly missing scoring opportunities. Their teamwork in attack and solid defence was commendable against a well-resourced opposition with seven substitutes.

SVC 2 fought out a 1-1 draw in a match where they were clearly the stronger side. They moved the ball beautifully and controlled most of the game. Unfortunately, the opposition equalised while SVC 2 was briefly down to eight players as four were sent off to retrieve mouthguards.

Both teams have one round game remaining and are well positioned for a place in the semi-finals. Well done to all players for their determination and skill!

                NETBALL

As we approach the final round of the regular season, I want to acknowledge and commend all our netball teams for their dedication and the fantastic season they have had so far. This week provides the last opportunity to fine-tune our games, give everything on the court, and finish the regular season on a high note. Whether teams are striving for a spot in the finals or celebrating a great season of netball, there is plenty to be proud of.

Let’s finish strong and bring the Vinnies Spirit!

                PERFORMING ARTS

                College Production

                College Production

It is such a relief for our HSC Dance and Drama cohort to have finished all their Practical examinations - now they only have the much smaller weighted component for the written part. Music HSC Practical examinations are this coming Tuesday and we wish them all the very best of luck.

Spring Fair is the next exciting thing for Performing Arts students as many students will be performing, singing and playing musical instruments for the community to enjoy. Please come along to the Caritas Christi courtyard where the ensembles and soloists will be performing for the community!

I am very excited to announce our College Production tickets are now on sale. The play is This Murder was staged! I specifically choose this play because it has 25 speaking parts, all of which are interesting, fun and important in pushing the mystery forward. The play is a rollicking comedy and play within a play so if you enjoy a good ‘who dunnit it’ you will not be disappointed. This is another one of our events that showcases the talents, skills and joy of our subjects.

                GET TICKETS

I hope everyone will come and enjoy the Spring Fair , and the College Production and a reminder to keep your eye out for the Annual Dance Concert tickets that will also go on sale soon.  So much to celebrate and look forward to for our Performing Arts students and the greater community who supports these great young people.

                CO-CURRICULAR

Over the past few weeks, our co-curricular performance teams have been actively engaged in a number of competitions. I extend my congratulations to the Drama teams for securing first and second place in the Sydney Eisteddfod, and to our Dance teams for achieving multiple placings across the Dance Life Unite and CGSSSA competitions. I also commend all students who showcased their talents during Monday’s Music Night. Additionally, I acknowledge the students who have represented the College in a range of other activities, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Archdale Debating, among others.

                DANCE

Recently our dance performance teams for Contemporary, Jazz and Hip hop got the opportunity to perform and compete in two different competitions. There were rehearsals each week on different days, the lead up was very exciting, and everyone was very keen to participate and showcase our hard work in fun costumes. The senior and junior performance teams were very successful with our contemporary team placing 2nd in the first competition, Senior Hip hop 3rd, Junior Jazz 4th, and our senior jazz with a highly commended. In our second competition both Senior and Junior jazz teams placed 3rd. It was a very high standard at both competitions, and everyone was very proud of the results. This was a great experience for all.

                DEBATING

The Archdale Debating season has now come to an end after several weeks of exciting and challenging rounds. Throughout the competition, each of our teams put in a huge amount of effort preparing arguments, refining rebuttals, and developing confidence as speakers. All that hard work truly showed in the quality and success of each debate.

It was also wonderful to see how much everyone improved over the season. Beyond the debates themselves, our students connected with one another, sharing laughs, brainstorming ideas, and forming friendships, all while embracing the challenge and pushing themselves to do their best. The enthusiasm and dedication from all the teams made this season such a success.

A huge congratulations to all our debaters on a fantastic season!

                DRAMA

For the Sydney eisteddfod, our group (Willow, Camille, Christina, Louisa and myself) performed our piece that was an interpretation of Pride and Prejudice. Backstage, we rehearsed as a group, perfecting our piece. Despite our nerves, we performed well, fixing mistakes on stage. Lets just say there were a few mishaps, including some people saying the wrong lines and costumes breaking on stage. But we worked really hard and it was an amazing surprise to come first against some tough competition.

                DUKE OF ED

On Thursday, I had the opportunity to attend a ceremony at Government House to celebrate my achievement of the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. During this ceremony, I met the Governor General of NSW and was reunited with one of my friends from the camp I did for the Silver award. It was a unique and incredible experience that I was fortunate enough to be a part of due to the Duke of Edinburgh program, which I highly recommend to any interested. It is difficult and requires consistency and commitment, but it is so incredibly rewarding. This award has pushed me out of my comfort zone so many times and thus helped me to grow as a person. I've met so many new people from so many backgrounds when I've participated in both the camps and the activities required to complete the awards. If you're even slightly considering signing up, do it. You won't regret it, and even if you don't decide to go to Gold, any level of Duke of Ed is an achievement to be proud of.

Not only has Kayla achieved the above she has also completed her Piano AMEB Amus Diploma – passed with high distinction and Viola AMEB Grade 8 -passed with Honours.

                MUSIC

Music Night was held on the 1st of September, embracing the theme “Musicians in the Wild.” The evening showcased a diverse range of performances, including orchestral ensembles, solos, duets, and, of course, the Year 10 and Year 12 class items. For me, the experience of Music Night has been deeply rewarding. Performing each year has not only strengthened my confidence but also allowed me to refine my skills and grow as a performer. Music Night has always fostered a safe and encouraging environment where students, myself included, can share their talents and hard work with the community. This year was particularly significant, as it marked the final Music Night for the Year 12 class of 2025. The evening was a truly bittersweet occasion – one that we, as a class, will cherish. I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to Mr. McCrudden and the Year 12 Entertainment class for their dedication in organising the sound and lighting to ensure it ran seamlessly. Their efforts helped make the night such a memorable celebration of music and creativity.
