              PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

              From Our Principal

              From Our Principal

              Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to Semester 2 and a special welcome to our new families and staff members. A significant new appointment for us is that our College Business Manager Ms Maree Johnstone has this week joined the staff to take up this critical leadership role in the College. Most recently Ms Johnstone was the Business Manager of Loreto Kirribilli - a position she filled with distinction for over 20 years.

The first two days of the Semester were professional learning days for all the staff. The primary focus was the launch of our new SIS (School Information System), called VERACROSS. The enormous amount of work that preceded the launch ensured a very smooth transition with staff and students (on their first day) finding it intuitive and efficient. As parents, you too will notice some changes, but hopefully they will not be disruptive or difficult for you to navigate. I am deeply appreciative of the work of Mr Bob Anderson, Mr Michael Gargoura and Ms Alison Boyd-Boland, who have led our project control team for the last 12 months. In the second semester, more of our information management will move to Veracross, including all financial interactions. These modules are scheduled for Semester 1, 2026. Any changes that will impact financial processes will be notified to you well in advance of implementation.

Tuesday 22 July was the 167th anniversary of the death of Mary Aikenhead. The day was commemorated here in prayer and a very interesting reflection on Mary Aikenhead's possible response to AI. The reflection was led by Ms Maggie Doherty, a visiting scholar from St Mary's University, London. Her conclusion was that Mary Aikenhead would have embraced innovation as long as it served the people she was in ministry for - the poor, the marginalised and the vulnerable. Mary Aikenhead was in all things focused on the people of God and if AI can improve health care, ease the burden of unnecessary work, extend education opportunities, then the consensus was she would have been an early adopter. On Wednesday evening, Ms Doherty presented an extended version of the presentation to a wide and appreciative audience at the Mary Aikenhead Oration. It was an interesting perspective from which to understand Mary Aikenhead's legacy of being "extensively useful" in whatever context she and her early Sisters were serving. We take this anniversary to thank Sr Anne for her ongoing commitment to St Vincent's College and all the other Sisters of Charity in active ministry or retirement around the world.

Next week, members of the College Board, including myself, Mr Anderson, Ms Boyd-Boland and Ms Johnstone, will attend the Trustees of Mary Aikenhead conference with our Australian colleagues from Health, Education and Social Advocacy. It will be a wonderful period of conversation and collegiality.

              Enjoy the new Semester,

              Yours sincerely,

              Anne Fry

              DIRECTOR OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Welcome back to students and families. I hope that the holiday break was a restorative one and that students are ready to engage in a new semester of learning.

This week our big event has been the launch of our new student information system, Veracross. It is a really powerful tool and as we engage with more of its functionality over the coming weeks and months, we know that it will offer us enormous capacity to gain insights into each child at the College, so that we can monitor her learning progress over time.

However, it has not been the only event of the week.

Our Year 8 students are currently engaged in their subject selection for Years 9 and 10 in 2026 and 2027. They will be the first cohort to enjoy our reimagined approach to elective choices. Students will now have the capacity to study three courses of their choice in Stage 5. This change is part of our desire to ensure that students are given the opportunity to pursue passions, and engage with challenges in safe and supported environments.

Our Year 7 and 9 students are also receiving their NAPLAN results in the mail. The College continues to achieve a median score in the ‘Strong’ range across both year groups and in all domains. This testifies to the students tracking well in their  literacy and numeracy development, with many students achieving scores at the ‘Exceeding’ level. We are proud of our Year 9 students who have maintained a strong performance since they last completed the NAPLAN tests and have made some good gains in their writing skills in particular. As is the central aim and purpose of NAPLAN, we will be engaging in closer analysis of our NAPLAN progress in the coming weeks, using the data to support continued  school improvement and performance against  the national measure.

              LEADER OF SOCIAL JUSTICE

“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9

As we continue to live out this year’s theme of Service of the Poor, we take a moment to thank the incredible students and staff who gave up time in their holidays to volunteer with Vinnies Night Patrol.

In the middle of a cold Sydney winter, these volunteers spent their nights offering food, hot drinks, and care to people doing it tough. On the coldest of nights, they brought more than just supplies they brought conversation, a sense of connection, and made people feel known, accepted and valued. It was a powerful reminder that giving time is just as important as giving things.

One of our students, Macy of year 11, reflected:

“I volunteered at the Vinnies Night Patrol Van, and it was one of the most valuable experiences that I will carry with me from my time at St Vincent’s. Giving up some of my holidays to offer support and comfort to people living through tough situations was a humbling experience. Through offering drinks and food, I was able to engage in face-to-face conversations, and hear personal and sometimes heartbreaking stories that made me appreciate the importance of empathy, kindness, and community. Night patrol really reinforced that even small acts of generosity can have a meaningful impact on someone’s life.”

We also want to recognise the ongoing efforts of the Sandwich Project, where students prepare sandwiches that are distributed through the Vinnies Van. This project continues to provide real, hands-on help to people experiencing homelessness.

However, we do need help to keep this initiative going. The Sandwich Project relies entirely on Woolworths gift voucher donations from our community to buy ingredients. At the moment, we’ve run out of parent donations — and without new contributions, we won’t be able to continue this vital service. If you’re in a position to donate a voucher, it would make a huge difference to those who rely on this program each week. All donations can be emailed to:

              harveym@stvincents.nsw.edu.au

Finally, this term welcomes exciting new House-led service initiatives, with Cahill and DeLacy House taking the lead. We look forward to sharing more with you soon.

Thank you for being part of a community that shows up and gives generously, especially when it matters most.

              SPORT REPORT

              TERM 3 SPORT

I hope you’ve all had a restful break and that your daughters are feeling refreshed for what promises to be another exciting term of sport at St Vincent’s College.

A few important reminders as we begin the term:

Training & Absences: Training is a vital part of each student’s commitment to their team. Attendance is compulsory. If your daughter is unwell or unable to attend due to another commitment, please ensure that either myself or the Head Coach is notified via email prior to the session or game.

Uniform Expectations: Students are required to wear the full St Vincent’s College sports uniform for all Saturday fixtures. This means: Netball students must wear the College netball uniform, Basketball students must wear the basketball singlet, Soccer students must wear the designated soccer kit and Hockey students must wear the correct hockey uniform.

Supporting Our Boarders: A core strength of our community lies in the care we show one another. In this spirit, day students are expected to take turns assisting our boarding students with transport to and from games. This is a shared responsibility and a non-negotiable team expectation. No boarder should miss a game because a teammate did not follow through. We are one team, and everyone plays a part.

Accessing Information: All team lists, draws, and sport-specific information are available via the College Website under each respective sport, as well as on the College App (Clipboard). I encourage all students and parents to check these platforms regularly to stay up to date with any changes or announcements.

I’m looking forward to another fantastic term of sport.

              Good luck, and Go Vinnies

              Rural Health Pathway Showcase

Monday 8 September, ICC Darling Harbour

              4.00-7.30pm

This free event is organised by the Rural Doctor’s Network for students in Years 9 to 12 interested in pursuing careers in allied health, medicine, paramedicine and nursing . Please be advised, that parents and carers are most welcome to accompany their daughter to this event if they are able to.

              At the event attendees will:

              • Talk to representatives from colleges, universities, peak bodies and health employers about study pathways and career opportunities.
              • Speak one-on-one with and be inspired by health students, recent graduates and health professionals about their education and career journeys.
              • Participate in hands-on activities offering an immersive "day-in-the-life" perspective of various health careers.

This event is for students who are interested in health careers and may be interested in looking at rural opportunities in the future. This event would be Stage 1 of looking at health careers rurally. Then, if interested, there would be programs that immerse medical, nursing and paramedical students at uni on rural trips (to experience health system in rural settings) through to scholarships and bursaries for those studying and working rurally and also supporting recruitment and training of doctors, particularly in under resourced communities in rural and regional areas.

Registrations for this event are essential using the link found here
